Mount Vernon 596 Moeller Snare Drum 1934
Mount Vernon 596 Moeller Snare Drum 1934
This snare drum is one of the famous Mount Vernon NY Post 596 Moeller/Pop Classey set made in 1934. A full detail sheet is available, with an overview below.
- Solid one ply ash shell, shell size 17" dia x 15"
- The drum currently has goatskin heads, but it is capable of taking standard synthetic heads
- Original shell, ears, gut, strainer, and anchor; original art and tack design
- The strainer is vintage, original to the drum, looks very much like a simple Ludwig style strainer from the same era although it does not have a maker's mark
- Counterhoops are original to at least 1967, when the corps disbanded (then called the Colonial Greens). We don't have a picture of all the 1934 drums, but at least some had 10 holes rather than the 12 holes here, but the specs match the Moeller specs.
- The rope has been replaced with natural hemp (the detail sheet notes that it needs to be replaced, but that has since been done)
- The finish over the artwork is crackled, with wear and tear appropriate for the drum's age
- A short hairline crack was forming, seen in one of the flags. We have stabilized it and don't expect any progression
